Taken together, the first two Chinese characters (tài jí or 太極) can mean “large,” “extreme,” or “polar” in Chinese. The third character (quán or 拳) has the meaning “boxing” or “fists”. The entire term is typically translated more loosely as “ultimate boxing” or “shadow boxing.” Not coincidentally, the first two characters of tai chi chuan (tài jí or 太極) are those used to identify the image of yin (陰) and yang (陽).
